Their goal is... $18,000?
That could fund maybe a 3 minute short, not a film. I don't get it.
Edit: Okay so I read their actual funding site, and they say on there that 1 it's planned to be 40 minutes, and 2 it'll take at least 20,000,000 yen in budget to complete. But they're only asking for 2,000,000 because they say that unless they go ahead and start creating it there's no chance of it ever being completed.
So I guess you are crowdfunding the first 10% of the movie, and hoping that somehow magically turns into another 90% worth of investors coming from elsewhere to get it finished.

Wow, the pic instantly reminded me of Ashita no Joe, because I'm watching it at the moment The characters really look similar.
I know it's the same mangaka, but I've never seen such similarities in different titles aside from Masami Kurumada's works.
I hope they will reach their goal, because I love Chiba's storywriting in Ashita no Joe.

That's what called the "Tezuka Star System", after Osamu Tezuka's habit of re-using previously used character designs in his various works; Tezuka considered them actors, & apparently even gave them fake wages.
Along with Masami Kurumada & Tetsuya Chiba, other people who use the Tezuka Star System include Shotaro Ishinomori, Rumiko Takahashi, Leiji Matsumoto (especially for his females), Hayao Miyazaki, & (one could even argue) Hisashi Hirai, among others. It's an easy way to let readers identify with a new character, and also allows the creator to have fun by having the "actor" play against type in other works.
Anyway, I hope Chiba succeeds in getting this made, if only to see something animated from his catalog that isn't sports-based.

Well, technically, the storywriting in Joe is by Ikki Kajiwara, not Tetsuya Chiba, but I'm sure Chiba had enough say in how the story was told.
