Shun Oguri underwent 10 months of action training for the role and ended up losing 8 kilograms (17.6 pounds) during the process.
Shun Oguri previously portrayed the live action Shinichi Kudo. Shinichi Kudo was the teen counterpart of Conan Edogawa who has encountered Lupin III in two cross over movies.
Back in 2004, a live-action Lupin III movie was going to be made with Gerald R. Molen as producer. The film was slated for a late spring 2006 release. For reasons unknown the project never materialized and never was it ever mentioned again.
Tetsuji Tamayama previously star in the 2009 Goemon film, the title character that inspired Goemon Ishikawa XIII.

At age 32, Shun Oguri is the oldest actor to portray Lupin in a live action movie. Yuuki Meguro was 27 when he portrayed Lupin in the previous live action film.
Filming only took two months to finish (from October 3 to December 26, 2013).
