Gloomy Bear Creator to Appear in San Francisco

Mori Chack, the creator of the Gloomy Bear character, will appear at the New People center in San Francisco's Japantown neighborhood for an autograph session on September 18. The event is part of the J-Pop Summit Festival event and the 10-year anniversary of Gloomy Bear.

The first 50 customers who buy a US$30 limited edition Gloomy Bear shirt in the store on September 18 will gain a pass to the signing at 3:00 p.m. Gloomy Bear is a character drawn in a cute style but usually seen with blood or causing harsh violence.

Viz Cinema announced the editor of Otaku USA, Patrick Macias, will host a talk at New People on September 13 as part of a lineup in the week leading to the J-Pop Summit Festival. The talk is titled "Bad Girls & Wild Women," and Macias will discuss "sexy Stray Cats, Female Prisoners, Delinquent Bosses and other captivating and sexy Bad Girl roles from Japanese cinema." Following the talk is a screening of Shunya Ito's film, Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion. The event is open to people older than 18, and tickets cost US$20.

Viz Cinema also announced the films in its festival lineup. The event will include Satoshi Kon's Paprika and Makoto Shinkai's 5 Centimeters Per Second, as well as the live-action films Death Note, Death Note II: The Last Name, and Detroit Metal City.
