The Japan Foundation will host a free online discussion of the manga artist Leiji Matsumoto (pictured) on Wednesday March 27, who passed away in February 2022. The discussion will start at 12 noon and places can be reserved at the above link.

The talk is described as follows:

"One year has passed since we lost Japanese manga and anime legend Leiji Matsumoto, known for Space Battleship Yamato and Galaxy Express 999 as well as INTERSTELLA 5555, his collaboration with Daft Punk. His works led the anime boom of 1970s and 1980s in Japan, influencing creators around the world. His philosophical themes brought about an era in which anime and manga took their place alongside mainstream films and literature to become a global phenomenon.

"Come join our panel discussion with four manga and anime experts: Darren-Jon Ashmore, Deborah Shamoon, Tim Eldred and Zack Davisson. They will introduce Matsumoto's legacy and dive into the universal appeal and essence of the “Matsumoto style” on the first anniversary of his passing.

"The discussion will be followed by a live Q&A. If you have any questions about Leiji Matsumoto and his works, now's your chance to ask the experts! Please feel free to post it on the Eventbrite page when you register. Live commentary will also be enabled on the YouTube stream, so you can participate in the Q&A session."

Leiji Matsumoto's notable works include Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999, and Queen Emeraldas — all of which inspired multiple anime or live-action adaptations — and he contributed designs and created the tie-in manga for Space Battleship Yamato. He also supervised animated music videos for French electronic pop group Daft Punk's Discovery album, and the videos were strung together into the INTERSTELLA 5555 film. His designs and works have influenced multiple generations of artists around the world.
