Misread Report Starts K-On Net Rumor About Real School

posted on by Egan Loo

The Asahi Chūgakusei Weekly newspaper published an April 11 article on the renewed interest in school uniforms. The article discussed the official cosplay uniforms from the K-ON! anime, and profiled two schools that are rethinking uniforms. However, a misleading summary of the article has led to widespread Japanese net rumors that a real high school will introduce K-On-inspired uniforms to its student body.

A person posted a blurry image of the article under the account name "harut00" on Saturday. In the image's caption, "harut00" claimed that a high school in Chiba Prefecture was going to model its uniforms after the uniforms in the K-ON! anime. Within hours, the rumor spread rapidly on the Japanese forum 2channel, the Twitter service, and elsewhere.

However, the actual Asahi Chūgakusei Weekly article reports a different story. The article did note that the Cospa chain of cosplay stores began selling outfits based on K-ON! anime's school uniforms. In a later section about two real schools, the article noted that the Chiba Prefectural Kogane Senior High School in Matsudo City will institute uniforms among incoming freshmen in 2011, after previously allowing its students to wear regular clothes. However, the article did not say that Kogane's new uniforms will be based on K-On's.
