Taiwan's CCM, Japan's Shirogumi Make 3D Sun Yat-sen Film

Story of father of Republic of China to open in Taiwan, Japan, mainland China in 2012

The Taiwanese production company Chunghwa Chungshan Media and the Japanese animation studio Shirogumi Inc. announced on Monday that they are producing a 3D animated film of Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of the Republic of China. The Sun Yat-sen film will not only screen in Taiwan and Japan, but also in mainland China.

Sun was one of the leaders of the 1911 Chinese Revolution, and he became the Provisional President of the Republic of China the following year. Both Taiwan and mainland China consider Sun Yat-sen to be the "Father of the Nation." This month marks the 100th anniversary of the revolution.

The film project takes advantage of last year's Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), which removed the restrictions on Taiwanese films released in mainland China. China limits the importation of foreign films to about 50 titles a year, but ECFA now allows an unlimited number of films whose budgets are at least 50% from Taiwan. This Taiwanese/Japanese co-production allows Shirogumi to make a film for release in China that it could not otherwise.

The companies plan to release the film late next year, and they are also planning a television series about Sun, games, publications, other projects for release in China. TV Tokyo and Chinese animation production companies are also participating.
