Dynasty Warriors Franchise Gets Strategy RPG

Koei Tecmo Games reveals Shin Sangoku Musou: Eiketsuden

Kadokawa's Weekly Famitsu magazine is reporting on Thursday that Koei Tecmo Games' Dynasty Warriors (Shin Sangoku Musou) action game franchise is inspiring a strategy role-playing game titled Shin Sangoku Musou: Eiketsuden (Dynasty Warriors: Legend of Great Heroes). The magazine is publishing a six-page feature with information on the game and an interview with franchise producer Atsushi Miyauchi.

Koei Tecmo Games had teased during its "Romance of the Three Kingdoms 30th Anniversary Announcement" event last May that its Omega Force team was working on a new installment in the franchise.

The original games bring The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Luo Guanzhong's classic novel about a war-torn era in Chinese history, to the hack-and-slash genre. KOEI released the first Sangoku Musou (Dynasty Warriors) game in 1997 for the PlayStation as a spinoff of its Romance of the Three Kingdoms strategy game franchise. Since then, it has released seven more games in the main series, and numerous spinoffs (including the Samurai Warriors series).

Many of the spinoffs involve collaborations with other franchises, such as Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage, One Piece Pirate Warriors, and Hyrule Warriors. Square Enix released the Dragon Quest Heroes spinoff last year. The Arslan: The Warriors of Legend (Arslan Senki x Musou) game, based on Hiromu Arakawa and Yoshiki Tanaka's The Heroic Legend of Arslan (Arslan Senki) manga, followed in Japan last October and in the West in February.

Koei Tecmo released Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires (Shin Sangoku Musou 7: Empires), the latest entry in the main numbered series, in the West on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, PS Vita, and Microsoft Windows.

The Hong Kong company China 3D is planning to shoot a live-action film next year for release in 2018. Roy Hin Yeung Chow (Murderer, Nightfall, Rise of the Legend) is directing, and his wife Christine To Chi-Long (Murderer, Nightfall, Rise of the Legend) is writing.
