A Silent Voice to also screen at Anime Expo

Anime News Network's coverage of Anime Expo 2017 is sponsored by Aniplex and Yen Press.

Eleven Arts announced at its Anime Expo panel on Saturday that it will host theatrical screenings for the A Silent Voice and Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Reflection anime films this October. A Silent Voice will screen at Anime Expo on Monday, July 3 at 4:00 p.m.

Naoko Yamada and Kyoto Animation's A Silent Voice (Koe no Katachi) anime film is based on Yoshitoki Ōima's manga of the same name. Anime Limited screened the film in the United Kingdom and Ireland in March. Viz Media Europe acquired the rights to distribute the film in the European Union, Russia, Turkey, and French-speaking African countries.

Crunchyroll describes the original manga's story:

I wish we had never met. I wish we could meet once again.
A boy who can hear, Shoya Ishida, and a transfer student who can't, Shoko Nishimiya. One fateful day, the two meet, and Shoya leads the class in bullying Shoko. But before long, the class shifts its target from Shoko to Shoya. Years later, Shoya feels strongly that he must see Shoko once again.

The film earned 2.3 billion yen in Japan, and was the 19th highest-grossing film released in Japan in 2016.

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Reflection will open in Japan on July 22. The project is planned as two films, although the second film's release date has not yet been revealed.

In the story, a pair of researchers stay behind on their dying planet of Eltria with their two daughters, Amitie and Kirie, in hopes of finding a way to revive the planet. But when the husband Granz falls ill it seems their dream of reviving the planet will die. Against her older sister's wishes, Kirie sets off with her childhood friend Iris to seek help from a distant alternate world. They arrive in Japan on Earth to search for the key to their planet's regeneration. There, they meet Nanoha Takamachi, Fate T. Harlaown, and Hayate Yagami.

Masaki Tsuzuki is credited with the original work, and is also penning the script. Takayuki Hamana (The Prince of Tennis, Library War, Appleseed XIII) is directing the film at Seven Arcs Pictures. Kana Hashidate (Dog Days) is drawing the character designs, and Shochiku is distributing the film. Nana Mizuki is performing the film's theme song "Destiny's Prelude."

Tsuzuki's Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha franchise includes four television anime series, two anime films, and numerous spinoff manga. The fourth television anime series, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha ViVid, premiered in April 2015. ViVid Strike!, the new television anime by franchise creator and scriptwriter Masaki Tsuzuki, premiered in October.
