Sara Minami, Aju Makita star in film about shy girl and tone deaf girl's friendship

A live-action film adaptation of Shūzō Oshimi's Shino-chan wa Jibun no Namae ga Ienai (Shino Can't Say Her Own Name) manga has been green-lit for July 2018.

Sara Minami will play Shino, while Aju Makita will play Kayo. Both actresses are 15 years old, and the movie will mark their first main character roles. Other cast members include Riku Hagiwara, Kinuo Yamada, and Kaoru Okunuki.

Hiroaki Yuasa is directing the film, with a script by Shin Adachi.

The manga centers on Shino Ōshima, a shy high school freshman who has difficulty speaking with people, and who constantly has a low opinion of herself and can't fit in to her environment. Through a strange encounter, she gets to know Kayo, her music-loving but tone deaf classmate, and they begin hanging out with each other. Oshimi based the manga on his personal experiences.

Oshimi launched the manga in Ohta Publishing's Poco Poco web manga magazine in December 2011, and ended it in 2012. Ohta Publishing released one volume for the manga.

Oshimi launched the Flowers of Evil manga in Kodansha's Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine in 2009 and ended the series in the June 2014 issue. Vertical published the manga in North America, and Crunchyroll streamed the anime adaptation as it aired in Japan in 2013. Sentai Filmworks released the anime on home video in 2014.

Oshimi's Inside Mari manga ran in Futabasha's Manga Action magazine from 2012 to September 2016. Crunchyroll began publishing the manga series online in December 2013. Oshimi launched the ongoing manga Happiness in 2015, and Kodansha Comics is publishing the manga in English.
