Held from January 3rd through February 28th, this contest has been a rollercoaster of a competition. Most dramatically, Nami's ranking leapt from seventh all the way to third place in the second half of voting. These results demonstrate the enormous diversity of the ONE PIECE fandom. The character X Drake, whose design is considered to be inspired by the country of Turkey!, was ranked 41st overall, but 2nd in Turkey!. The character Morgans ranked 80th worldwide but 38th in North America, suggesting that his knowledge of global affairs in the world of ONE PIECE appeals to Americans. A character whose image country is Russia, Nico Robin, ranked 6th overall. Carrot surged from 17th place to finish in 8th place. Greg Werner (ONE PIECE commentator/critic) said, “Carrot is a beloved character and the dedication of furry fandom may have played a large role in this result.”
With such diversity, Luffy's win in this contest cements the protagonist as the fans' favorite, while Nami's surge in votes speaks to the growing popularity of female characters in the world of manga. By the end of voting, 12 million votes were cast for a total of 1,174 different characters.
