18if (TV) Good
Absolute Duo (TV)
Air Master (TV) Not really good A show with some fun and funny bits, but in general the characters are rather one dimensional.
All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku (OAV) Very good The Original. Main character has divorced parents, rare for anime, and not carried into the other spin-off series
All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku (TV) Very good Unlike Nuku Nuku DASH, the classic Nuku Nuku TV series is far more akin to the original OAVs, but certain less culturally desirable elements have been swept away (Ryonosuke's parents are still together, etc). Silly and lighthearted, Nuku Nuku TV unfortuneately develops a predictable episodic quality to allow for the length of a TV season worth of episodes.
All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku DASH! (OAV) Good A decent remake, it isn't as pure and loveable as the original.
Amagi Brilliant Park (TV)
(The) Ancient Magus' Bride (TV) Very good
Ange Vierge (TV)
Angel Beats! (TV) Very good
Angel's 3Piece (TV) Very good
Angelic Layer (TV) Very good Some of the best fighting scenes in any anime anywhere. CLAMP's first shonen series. A great anime for anyone who has said "I can't decide what to watch, Card Captor Sakura or Dragonball Z"...
Assassination Classroom (TV)
Astarotte's Toy (TV) Decent
Astra Lost in Space (TV)
Baccano! (TV) Good Mediaworks manages to produce an incredible atmosphere, as usual, and the plot is immediately intriguing, basically revolving around a group of immortals (a la 3X3 EYES) in the U.S. during the 1930's. Unfortunately, despite the well designed backdrops, the action seems clunky, disjointed, and obviously written from the perspective of someone unfamiliar with American culture. Perhaps it is simply because I live in the United States that I found this irksome, but some scenes (Gangster's making big speeches from their balconies like polticians?) seem like they should be nonsensical regardless of one's culture. Irregardless, I wouldn't be averse to continuing to view this series, but as it stands from the first episode I'd find it hard to give this more than a decent rating.
Bakuon!! (TV)
Battle Girl High School (TV) Decent
Berserk (TV 2016) Good
(The) Big O (TV) Good Steeped in Pseudo-Gothic comic-book style, the Big O has a plot which is very reminicent of an American comic book as well. Overflowing with strong, angular lines, and retro sensibilities, everything looks like it lept off of a Frank Lloyd Wright design board. Mentally stimulating but not to the point of losing the audience, the Big O manages to incorporate giant mecha combat into it all.
Black Butler (TV) Good Kuroshitsuji is black comedy that reminds me slightly of the type the English do, that is to say clever, and just a little bit twisted. It strikes me as the sort of thing to remain highly formulaic, but not unenjoyable.
BlazBlue Alter Memory (TV)
Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan (TV) Decent This is a really, really messed up anime. It has some pretty funny moments, but the almost constant stream of gore spouting from the main character's head is a little too disconcerting to make it truly enjoyable for me.
Blue Archive The Animation (TV)
Blue Drop (TV)
Blue Gender (TV) Decent A decent execution of a mediocre concept that seems to have been done before. While there isn't really anything negative to say about this series, there isn't anything that really makes it stand out either.
Bodacious Space Pirates (TV) Excellent
Boys Be... (TV) Very good A series of inciteful stories detailing the struggles of young people with their emotions and sexual frustrations. Truely an inspiration, despite each episode being more or less self-contained, it is easy to immediately identify with the characters, or feel like you know or knew someone just like them. A celebration of youth and growing up, Boys be has a way of turning even negative experiences to a positive light. If romantic shoujo stories were written for men, they'd be like this.
Brain Powered (TV) Good (dub & sub) On Organic Mecha concept which is actually fairly original in both concept and execution. Characters are rather dull, but not so much as to be detracting from the overall program.
Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 (TV) Decent If you take the original Bubblegum Crisis, give every character a hit of crack and a pot of black coffee, you can pretty much predict how they'll act in 2040. While the fleshing out of the setting is a really great bonus, the characters are "Eva-ised" and unlikeable in the extreme. The new hardsuit designs later on are ridiculous looking, and the characters look like they were lifted straight out of other AIC anime without any modification. The wierd looking head during the ending credits is horribly creepy.
Burn Up Excess (TV) Good (dub & sub) If you've seen Burn-Up W!, then more of the same, with a little less flesh exposed for the sake of the television audience.
Bus Gamer (TV) So-so Three guys: the scruffy good looking one; the angsty good looking one, and the nerdy yet still kinda good looking one get a mysterious black letter that promises them the chance to win a lot of money. They go to the address contained therein, and they're told they can win large sums of cash by participating in team-street fights, they agree and go out and club some guys with a pipe, while the nerdy guy whines about how they need to get along. Now that I've told you the entire plot, and you've seen the picture of the three guys, you have absolutely no reason to ever watch this show, unless you are such a fangirl that you absolutely, POSITIVELY have to see every show that has ever been made starring angsty & possibly grungy pretty boys. Is Bus Gamer horrible? No. The animation quality is decent, the cast is believable in their characterizations, and the soundrack is passable. Bus Gamer is an unimaginative, throwaway avenue for the exposition of angsty bishounen which is without any real plot or action. Even the fighting is utterly forgettable.
C – Control – The Money and Soul of Possibility (TV) Very good
(The) Café Terrace and Its Goddesses (TV) Very good
Campione! (TV) Very good
CANAAN (TV) Very good Incredibly well animated, I haven't really watched enough of CANAAN to really catch on to it. The characters seem somewhat dull, and the plot seems somewhat vague in the early episodes, although it's not readily apparent if that is because the bulk of the plot remains a mystery to be revealed or if the series simply doesn't have much. The action sequences are breathtaking, but otherwise, the substance has not as yet been particularly impressive.
Case Closed (TV) Good A simple premise, with amicable characters and decent mysteries.
Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! (TV)
Chidori RSC (TV)
Chillin' in Another World With Level 2 Super Cheat Powers (TV)
Chronicles of the Going Home Club (TV)
City Hunter (TV) Very good An episodic classic that follows the paint-by-numbers pattern of "Girl in trouble shows up looking for help, Girl hires Ryo Saeba, Ryo Saeba shamelessly hits on Girl, bad guy shows up and gets beat, Ryo Saeba either gets some or gets the boot depending on the episode. For all it's simplicity it has lots of funny moments, a few memorable action scenes, and is generally pleasant throughout.
Clannad (TV) Very good Filled with some of the most gorgeous uses of lighting effects found in anime, Clannad sometimes seems to be more a series of character vignettes than a cohesive series. Each scene is like a little soft broken heart, a moment frozen in time both tear-jerking yet upliftingly beautiful. That said, there are a few eye-rolling moments, where it seems like the characters lives are full of too much angst to be real, and main character Tomoya seems to be something of a jerk. Still, all in all, Clannad is a beautiful, serenely paced series.
Classroom of the Elite (TV)
Conception (TV) Decent
Corrector Yui (TV) Good (sub & raw) Following hot on the heels of the Turn of the Century "Computer Societies" anime trend, Corrector Yui manages to entertain by being mostly a typical Maho Shoujo production placed in a digital setting, which gives the main character some unusual costars (a anthropomorphic dog police officer, for example). Sweet and sugary, without being overly so, and without neglecting the plot.
Croisée in a Foreign Labyrinth - The Animation (TV) Good
Cutie Honey Universe (TV) Good
Cyborg 009 The Cyborg Soldier (TV) Good Animated in a Retro 70's style, Cyborg 009 appears to be the systematic episodic anime of yesteryear while actually containing an uncharacteristic deal of character development and plot twists for if it were actually a show from that era. Suprisingly down to Earth and self-reflective, it could easily fool you into thinking that it was written by Osamu Tezuka.
D.I.C.E. (TV) Not really good Like Power Rangers meets Rescue Heroes, I didn't see anything in this show to draw me in whatsoever. This may be the fault of the American regionalization, but I don't know.
D.N.Angel (TV) Very good For a shoujo anime, D.N. Angel definitely has some cross-market appeal. Riku and Risa Harada are attractive, perky, and likeable, and immediately drew me in. The series has a fairly interesting concept and is both humorous and engaging. It is also interesting that while the main character's alternate ego (Dark) is bishounen, he (Daisuke) is most definitely not. Nice to see that someone appreciates the dorky guy.
D4 Princess (TV) Good A parody comedy about a magical girl who is (perhaps rightfully) embarassed that she has a Drill on her head and that her powers are drill based. Good for a quick, short laugh, but not particularly riveting.
Daimidaler: Prince vs. Penguin Empire (TV)
Date A Live V (TV)
Death March to The Parallel World Rhapsody (TV) Decent
Death Note (TV) Good I was surprised that I found this show to be rather entertaining, considering that I'm not big on the overly jaded, gothy atmosphere, which simply strikes me as phony. What caught me off guard was behind the facade of overdone angst is a relatively good "catch a crook" plotline which I managed to find interesting. I'm not about to rave about this series like some people - It's not the worlds most original work, but it does have it's good points.
Demashitaa! Powerpuff Girls Z (TV) Good Interesting as it is a Japanese interpretation of an American intellectual property. On the positive side, the girls are older, have more personality and character, and literally drive the show with their spunky interactions. On the down side, some of the supporting characters come off as overly simplified, as if the Japanese writers didn't know what to do with them (Mayor-shinchou! I'm looking at you! Your quirky name doesn't justify your existance!) and Mojo-Jojo is criminally retarded for a monkey with an oversized brain.
Demonbane (TV)
Denshin Mamotte Shugogetten (OAV) Good Basically Aa! Megami-sama with a lot more slapstick and a lot less romance, Mamotte Shugogetten is a fun distraction, but stands up poorly when compared to other series in the same genre. Perhaps the characters will get more development and time for interaction later on in episodes I haven't seen, but seemingly they are cookie-cutter representations of common anime clichés (lonely high school boy who lives alone, perfect yamato nadeshiko dream girl who cleans, oversexed female rival who sexually assaults the main character, etc)
(The) Devil Is a Part-Timer!! (TV 2) Not really good
Digimon Adventure (TV) So-so While I will fairly admit that I haven't seen enough of Digimon to give it a fair shake, there really doesn't seem to be very much going on here. While Pocket Monsters at least has fun, interactive characters at the heart of their story, Digimon seems to rely on gimmicky monsters that evolve or combine every episode like Sentai giant robots. There's nothing here that is horrible, but nothing fantastic either.
Dirty Pair (TV) Good While many old school anime fans will swear by this series, I hate to admit it, but it is highly dated. The poor animation quality & hokey plots have not made this show age gracefully. Luckily, the sheer zaniness and slapstick of the humor has allowed this show to not totally lose all value. Think of it as the anime equivalent of watching the Three Stooges.
Dragon Ball (TV) Good Simple, silly, irreverent, and fun. Not particularly intelligent but considering the intended audience that is not a detractor.
Dragon Ball GT (TV) Decent (edit.dub & sub) By the end of Dragonball Z, the power levels of the fighters had already increased to such a ridiculous level that worlds were destroyed with a thought and more time was spent showing the effect fighters attacks had on the local ecosystem than the fight itself because it was the only way to portray the ludicrous amount of energy being thrown around. Dragonball GT contorts an already over the top plot in arbitrary directions to justify the continuation of the series. The fact that Goku had to power DOWN for the finale is proof positive that this is one show that went on waaay too long.
Dragon Drive (TV) So-so The moderate amount of this I saw didn't catch my interest. Apparently yet another Monster Trainer show, but this time the main character bonds mentally with the dragon and has control. Is it just me or do the main character and the baby dragon seem a little too close?
Dragon Pilot: Hisone and Masotan (TV) Good
Dragonar Academy (TV) So-so
Dropkick on My Devil! (TV) Not really good
Ebiten: Ebisugawa Public High School's Tenmonbu (TV) Very good
ēlDLIVE (TV) Good
Encouragement of Climb Second Season (TV)
Ergo Proxy (TV) Decent Ergo Proxy appears to be a routine government bio-weapon conspiracy story which the authors attempted to disguise as something more creative through the use of "artsy" techno-gothic visuals. The result is something which is unintentionally somewhat comical. The series characters appear lifeless, and it's setting & plot are cookie-cutter copies from a number of other dystopian science fiction stories. While it's not terrible, it certainly isn't original, and it really doesn't live up to other anime offerings in the same genre.
Eureka Seven (TV) Very good Funky, fun, & a little psychodelic, Eureka Seven can be a little surprising to those who come in judging it on it's retro-character designs and surfboard riding Mecha. Less a Mecha program and more an adventure drama, Eureka Seven packs a lot of great storytelling into an entertaining package.
Fate/Grand Carnival (OAV) Excellent
Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya 3rei!! (TV)
Fate/Zero (TV) Excellent
Flame of Recca (TV) Very good I'm on record for disliking the typical "beat 'em up" shonen martial arts anime. Flame of Recca has personality and plot that make it attractive to more than just the typical fan of fighting for fighting's sake.
Flying Witch (TV) Good
(The) Foolish Angel Dances with the Devil (TV)
(The) Fruit of Grisaia (TV)
Fullmetal Alchemist (TV) Good A decent series with interesting characters and a long-running intensive plot. Unfortuneately, I haven't gotten the chance to see it from the beginning and it does a poor job of drawing your attention in once it has begun, leaving viewers just turning in watching a series of drab scenes filled with mystic babble that seemingly doesn't mean anything. Without having seen it from the beginning, I can't truthfully say what the actual state of this series is.
Fushigi Yugi (TV) Very good The quintessential work of Yu Watase, Fushigi Yugi is a marvelous work of traditional Shojo drama. With a premise which is a role reversal from typical shonen love comedies, Yu Watase proceeds with her trademark methods of making you love the characters and then tearing them apart one by one before the inevitable resolution. A beautiful anime for the person who doesn't mind getting their heartstrings pulled.
Futakoi (TV) Good A simple, somewhat shallow paint-by-numbers Shonen Love-Comi. While it has it's moments of both humor and charm, Futakoi falls so far below other series in the same genre in terms of both animation quality & character concept that there's really little here that can't be found somewhere else, and better. Only for those with a twin-fetish or who have to absolutely see every Shonen Lovecomi out there.
Futari wa Milky Holmes (TV)
Gakuen Alice (TV)
Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight! (TV) Very good Sweet and cuddly, Manabi Straight is like settling your head upon a comforting pillow. It's soft melancholy coated in warm, cheerful antics is unique and definitely shows the talents of the creators. However, it's pretty hard to believe girls this young looking are supposed to be in High School.
Gantz (TV) Bad Gantz is a huge disappointment, because it shatters my previously held assertion that Studio Gonzo could do no wrong. While there are hints of an attempt to comment on the human condition in Gantz, on the whole, the series seems to be primarily interested in being crude for no other reason than the shock value of it all. Every evil and vice of man is hyper-exaggerated and everything is deliberately rubbed in your face with disgusting detail. If the point of Gantz is that people are vile, then WE GET IT. An entire series of people being total jerks to one another and assaulting one another isn't necessary to get that point across. The questions about the scenario set up in the series are never answered, and in the end it's nothing but a vehicle for guro porn and bad behavior as spectacle. No thanks, Studio Gonzo, I'm very disappointed in you.
Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet (TV)
Gasaraki (TV) Good With mecha lifted from Armored Trooper VOTOMS and dropped into the Global War on Terrorism, Gasaraki mysteriously places an emphasis on the mystical, and immediately attempts to keep the audience guessing as to what is really going on. Developed in the post-EVA era, stark, angst filled characters abound with nary a smiling face to liven things up.
Gatchaman (TV) Very good Classic over-the-top seventies drama at its greatest, this show actually holds up very well for it's age. Dialogue is campy, but not to the extreme one would expect. A wonderful visit to anime's roots.
Gekidol (TV) Decent
Getbackers (TV) Good Basically a buddy comedy with a little drama thrown in for good measure. Mildy original premise.
Ghost Stories (TV) Weak
Gintama (TV) Very good A gag anime with a lot of spunk, Gintama is hilariously, off the wall funny. This is goofy, screwball spectacle humor at it's best. Having seen it, it's easy to understand how it has run for so long. Unfortunately, it has run so long, that watching it all would be a huge investment. Thankfully, it seems very episodic, meaning that watching it out of order wouldn't really lessen the entertainment value.
Girl Friend BETA (TV)
Girl's High (TV) Awful Girl's High is like unwrapping the prettiest present you've ever seen, only to find a turd inside. No matter how pretty the paper, gorgeous the bow, all you've got is poo. While visually appealing and sporting some snaping OP/ED music, Girl's High is probably the most shameless pile of deliberate, pointless fan servicey crap since VS Kishi Ramune & 40 FRESH, and without that series sense of humor or class. Anyone even thinking about watching this, do yourself a favor and just go rent some hentai instead.
Girls und Panzer das Finale (movie series)
Girls und Panzer das Finale (OAV)
Glitter Force (TV)
Good Luck Girl! (TV) Good
Grimms Notes the Animation (TV)
GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka (TV) Very good While operating an episode of the week mentality throughout (kid tries to punk Onizuka, Onizuka outpunks them), GTO praises the bad boy who wants to do good, and does a good job doing it. Like that one kid you know that's cool but always hangs out with the unpopular kids, Onizuka isn't the coolest on the block, but is always fun.
Guilty Crown (TV) Good
Gungrave (TV) Good
(The) Guyver: Bio-Booster Armor (OAV) Good Sentai by way of Biotech, with added violence.
Hakumei and Mikochi (TV) Good
Hanasaku Iroha - Blossoms for Tomorrow (TV) Excellent
Hatena Illusion (TV)
Heaven's Memo Pad (TV) Very good
Hellsing (TV) Good I've seen very little of this anime, but as far as Vampire themed anything goes, it has my attention, which is more than I can say for just about anything else in the genre. The angular style in which it is drawn is very artistic and the characters are interesting enough without totally falling into the clichés of typical goth vampire stories.
Heroic Age (TV) Good An intriguing science fiction series which warrants further viewing.
(The) Heroic Legend of Arslan (OAV) So-so Boring as a textbook, the Heroic Legend of Arislan is a poorly executed fantasy OAV that is already insufferable from its onset. With a trite and predictable story about a Prince who has lost his kingdom to an evil overlord (who killed the prince's dad and married mom) and decided to try to win it back, this anime would have to have fantastic actions scenes and energetic interesting characters to keep it going. Instead, it has nothing but scene after scene of dull pastels and one-dimensional characters, that ride leisurely through the most predictable plot imaginable. From what I've told you and the blurbs about this anime already on this website, I am sure you can already figure out what happens, so I won't waste my time attempting to further illiterate it.
Heroman (TV) Excellent
Hetalia World Series (TV)
Higehiro (TV) Decent
High School DxD (TV) Decent
HIMOTE HOUSE: A share house of super psychic girls (TV) So-so
Humanity Has Declined (TV) Excellent
Hundred (TV) Decent
Hunter X Hunter (TV 1999) Very good Having only seen around three episodes in raw Japanese, I can only say that this series has real potential, and is fairly original as far as the typical "beat 'em up" shonen faire is concerned.
Hyakko (TV) Good Goofy, cute, silly, and meaningless hijinks delivered without subtext or narrative, Hyakko isn't a great anime, but it's well animated and a decent way to burn a half-hour.
Hyper Police (TV) Good Not the most in depth anime, it makes for a fun distraction on a Saturday morning or rainy Sunday afternoon. The Character designs by Keiji Goto, as always, are simply gorgeous. Lighthearted fun.
I'm Gonna Be An Angel (TV) Very good Studio Peirrot is the source of many a zany, off the wall anime, and Tenshi ni Narumon is no exception. Blurring the line between anime and Betty Boop cartoons from the thirties, Tenshi ni Narumon is about as spastic and off the wall as possible. In the end, it managese the combination suprisingly well.
Idol Incidents (TV)
Ikki Tousen (TV) Decent a flurry of violence and fan service, Ikki Tousen is very similar to dozens of other shonen anime series, so why do I actually enjoy it? Well, the characters are actually different from the average beat 'em up, being actually slightly interesting, and the plot, based on the legends of the 12 Kingdoms era of China, is also a step apart, but truthfully, a lot of it is just that Ikki Tousen looks good visually, and heck, I'm not above taking a helping of fan service now and again.
Inuyasha (TV) Very good (dub & raw) The postive side of Inu Yasha is that it is classic Rumiko Takahashi, epic stories with traditional Japanese settings, quarreling lovers not quite ready to admit their feelings, and over the top combat. The negative is that this isn't anything that people following Rumiko Takahashi haven't seen before.
Iron Man (TV)
(The) irregular at magic high school (TV 3)
Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night (TV)
K-ON! (TV) Good A cute little slice of life series which is extremely overhyped. It's calm, silly atmosphere is enjoyable, but it's characters are somewhat flat and unengaging, making it's popularity somewhat puzzling. The OP & EDs however, are fantastic, both in terms of music & animation.
Kamen no Maid Guy (TV) Good An absolutely bizarre comedy. The activity in this series is frantic and frenetic, which might cause some viewers to become overwhelmed and lose track of what's even going on. Still, an entertaining and original series.
Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne (TV) So-so This anime suffers from a host of flaws from its inception, mostly traced back to the idea that stealing items that are possessed by demon spirits is the work of God, and that this ditzy, self-absorbed, superficial floozy is somehow the servant of the divine. As you can tell, I was immediately turned off.
Kamisama Kiss (TV) Very good
Kanokon: The Girl Who Cried Fox (TV) Weak
Kekkaishi (TV) Good Somewhere between traditional Shonen action and slice of life drama lies Kekkaishi. I only had the pleasure of seeing a couple of episodes over the shoulder of a friend who was following it. While it wasn't particularly drawing in anyway, the character interactions felt well written and natural and the plot seemed to be more than the average fair.
Kemono Friends (TV) Not really good
Key the Metal Idol (OAV) Masterpiece An interesting and intriguing look into the life of an automaton made to be human. A true updating of the type of story that Osamu Tezuka was fond of telling, a well animated and thought provoking work.
Kiddy Girl-AND (TV) Very good
Kill Me Baby (TV) Good
Kiss×sis (TV) Not really good
Knight Hunters (TV) Awful This is one anime that might as well have just been a poster. The mindnumbing plot that goes in no direction is simply a platform to show off pouty bishounen for little girls to fawn over. If your in to pretty boys, I'm sure you could find some other work that will sate your need in a fashion which provides far more additional entertainment value.
Knights of Ramune & 40 (TV) Very good
Kodocha (TV) Good (edit.dub), Masterpiece (sub) A series virtually impossible to explain in words but an instant classic to anyone who has ever seen it, little Sana spits out things you'd never expect to be coming from any elementary school girl, let alone an animated one, and at a pace that would put the Micromachines guy to shame. Off the wall and with absolutely no shame, Kodomo no Omocha doesn't just break cultural tabboos and restraints, it outright ignores them to get to the root of many real human delimas. Funimation's release disappoints on two counts, but only one of them is really their fault. Apparently, Funimation was unable to obtain rights to use the likeness and music of the band Tokio, which performed the first opening theme, so not only did they have to replace it with the second opening, but they also had to simply drop chunks of the japanese dialog which had their music in the background or in which they had a cameo. The second problem has to due with their edited dub, which seems designed with the intention of trying to get it on to a major American network. blah.
Konohana Kitan (TV)
KonoSuba – God’s blessing on this wonderful world! 3 (TV)
Kurokami The Animation (TV) Not really good
Kyo kara Maoh! (TV) Good
Kyōran Kazoku Nikki (TV) Very good
Laid-Back Camp (TV) Very good
(The) Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel - Northern War (TV) Not really good
(The) Legend of the Dog Warriors: The Hakkenden (OAV) Good A well animated rendition of a traditional Japanese story. Nothing particularly outstanding.
Legendary Armor Samurai Troopers (TV) So-so Having only seen this program in its edited dub format, I feel that I am incapable of fairly judging this anime. I can, however, give an adequate review of the english "translation". Ronin Warriors possesses an entertainment value similar and comparible to other boy's children's programs from the mid 80's, to include Transformers, Thundercats, and others, but stands slightly above those by having slightly more sophisticated characters, especially villains.
Lime-iro Senkitan (TV) Good Lime-iro Senkitan is just about the least historically accurate retelling of the Russo-Japanese War in the history of existance. Now, I haven't spent a lot of time studying that conflict, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't fought between the summoned mechanical familiars of Japanese school girls and a Russian BDSM club, and I'm also fairly sure there were no flying pre-dreadnaughts powered by guys having sex with them. Yep. The main character has sex with the ship in this series, folks. He has to. or they were all going to die. Yep. And the kids watched. Now, if you are like me, and you like all things preposterous and wacky in anime, you're probably thinking "Wow, really?! Where can I see this series!" If not, then you should probably forget you ever read this other than to remember that I told you never, ever to watch Lime-iro Senkitan, because I don't want to here you complain. You've been warned.
Linebarrels of Iron (TV) Very good
Log Horizon (TV)
Love Tyrant (TV) Good
Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! (TV)
Lupin the 3rd (TV) Very good (dub & sub & raw) About as classic as you can get without the name "Gundam" in the title, Lupin III is always good for a laugh, although the animation is quite understandably looking horribly dated.
Made in Abyss (TV) Excellent
Magic-kyun! Renaissance (TV)
Magical Canan (TV) Good I haven't seen much of Magical Kanan, but what I have seen wasn't particularly impressive. It struck me like a paint by numbers, parody of a maho shoujo show which turns into a serious maho shoujo show in the same vein as Magical Girl Pretty Sammy with none of the same charm as that series. Based on an H-Game? Go fig.
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's (TV) Good
Magical Girl Raising Project (TV)
Magical Project S (TV) Good Why Pioneer never deemed it necessary to produce a dubbed version of this series is beyond me. None of the content could be deemed offensive by even the most stringent moral standards, and I'm sure that this program could find a more devoted following among young girls. Starting out as a parody of the entire Maho Shoujo genre, Pretty Sammy unfortunately falls victim to turning into exactly the type of show it was created to mock. This doesn't make it bad, per se, since the entire program upholds animation, plot, and characterization quality on par with the original Tenchi Muyo OVAs, but it does lead to some degree of tedium.
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi (TV) Very good Yet another bizarre Gainex creation, I am becoming convinced that Gainex is attempting rewire the way our minds work. Easily a modern Japanese equivalent to such classic children's literature as Alice in Wonderland or the Wizard of Oz, but unabashed of the sometimes questionable and underlying adult content found in the former western works. A fun jaunt through your subconcious mind where imagination basically runs wild where it will.
Magical Warfare (TV)
Magical Witch Punie-chan (OAV) Very good
Magikano (TV) Decent Magikano is everything that gives Shonen Love-Comi a bad name. It's main character is a two-dimensional, motivationless place-holder. It's main female lead is a magic-using big-breasted slut with no moral scruples and a desperate need to get in the characters pants. The supporting cast is a cavalcade of unimaginative, stereotypical hangers-on who have decided to prevent the main female lead's seduction of the male main character, for a slew of arbitrary and uncreative reasons. 0 effort is put towards developing the characters motivations, personalities, or interests outside of the main characters sex. Only slightly more effort was put towards creating and advancing the plot. Unfortunately for the creators, Tokyokids, who no doubt expected to cash in on this shoddy paint-by-numbers program, the character designs are as boring as the paint in my mother's dining room, so I'm sure all the merchandising plans they had lined up ultimately came to nothing. Magikano is far from the worst anime in the world, heck, you might even get a chuckle or two out of it, but it's just not worth the money.
Mahoromatic: Something More Beautiful (TV) Very good The sequal to the sweet and simple Mahoromatic, very little is different from the first series except for the increasing amount of plot points moving along the storyline and the continuation of the move towards drama and away from simple comedy that was started by the finale of the previous season.
Majikoi - Oh! Samurai Girls (TV) Good
Maria Watches Over Us (TV) Good Having finally sat down and watched some of this series, I'm a little shocked that this is what launched the Yuri revolution. Whilst it's sweet enough, Maria-sama ga Miteru has a pacing similar to the shifting of tectonic plates, the dialogue between most of the characters is flatter than a bowling lane, and you get the distinct feeling that everything interesting has already happened, and you are simply hearing about it from the committee. Main love interest Sachiko has a personality like a dull hatchet, and it seems like everyone's relationships are decided not by themselves, but by a public opinion poll. Whilst I didn't hate watching Maria-sama gu Miteru, and I'd be willing to watch more of it if it was on, I can't say I'd go out of my way for it, and I am a little shocked at it's large popularity. Now I'm going to have a real problem with people who love this series and trash-talk Strawberry Panic.....
Mayo Chiki! (TV) Good
Maze (TV) Good The easiest way to describe this anime would be Ranma 1/2 meets Bakuretsu Hunters, it is a series that easily have been a hentai series, but it is not. Instead, it plays sexual situation and innuendo for humor at every opportunity while carrying on a setting-hopping episodic war against the evil overlord which feels very similar to Bakuretsu Hunters. While easily dismissable, the characters and personalities of Maze are it's saving grace, and viewers are always given a small nugget of plot an episode at a time, just enough to remained intrigued.
Maze (OAV) Good Full of hilarious sight and situational gags, poking fun at the creators and riddled with in-jokes, the OAV of Maze suffers from a single moment of bad taste which leads me to rate it as good instead of very good: It's lighthearted dismissal of rape as possibly being comic. I'm sorry, but treating sexual assault like a form of slapstick gag leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
Mazinger Z (TV) Very good
Medaka Box (TV) Decent
Metal Fighter Miku (TV) Good An OVA series from the 80's, this anime follows most of the typical clichés of the sports/martial arts genre, with the twist that the main characters are power-armored female pro-wrestlers. While it doesn't really have anything to make it stand out, it would be unfair to judge it poorly. The writers did their best to make an watchable, if unremarkable, work within the limited confines of the basic premise, and while not anything anyone should rush out to buy, there is nothing particularly wrong with this little show.
Michiko & Hatchin (TV) Good
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 (TV) Decent
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny (TV) Good
Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt (ONA)
Moetan (TV) Decent Wow. Super-Lolis teaching really bad and at times inappropriate English. My head just exploded.
Mon Colle Knights (TV) Bad (edit.dub), Good (raw) Lasting on American TV so long I almost feel I dreamed it, the Fox "translation" of Moncolle Knights so hacked and butchered the dialogue that it was obvious from looking at the animation, which didn't match in the slightest. When will American companies learn that if they want a show to fit their wholesome critera and be targeted exclusively at 5-8 year old boys, they need to go out and make it themselves. Rating for Japanese version is assumed, since I have never actually seen it.
MoonPhase (TV)
Mudazumo Naki Kaikaku (OAV) Very good
Mushi-Shi (TV) Very good
Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse (TV) Decent
My Bride is a Mermaid (TV) Good
My Master Has No Tail (TV) Good
My Sister, My Writer (TV) Not really good
Night Warriors - Darkstalkers' Revenge (OAV) Decent You can't expect much from an anime based on a Fighting game, and you don't get much with Vampire Hunter. With a plot not much deeper than the blurb on the video game's jacket liner, Vampire Hunter instead sets out to accurately animate fight sequences with the cast of the video game as true to the game as possible, which it succeeds in. High quality animation will not win this OAV over with anyone but the fanbase of the video game, and I sincerely doubt anyone else was intended to watch it.
Ninja Nonsense (TV) Good A wacky, cute series which all to quickly devolves into clichéd humor, 2 x 2 Shinobuden disappoints because it's potential is entirely wasted by the fourth episode, and yet it continues to drag on for an additional EIGHT.....MORE.......EPISODES! Why was this necessary! Couldn't you tell that you had used all your best bits by episode 3? What were you thinking? Do yourself a favor, watch the first episode, laugh, and then never watch this series again because it'll never be better than the first episode was.
No Game, No Life (TV)
No-Rin (TV) Decent
Nobunagun (TV) Good
Nurse Witch Komugi R (TV)
Nyaruko: Crawling with Love! (TV 2)
OBSOLETE (ONA)
Ojamajo Doremi (TV) Good (sub & raw) Cute, silly, and musical, this children's program is mesmerizing. Bright colors, cheering voices and laughter, and goofy looking characters doing nonsensical things make it so that you cannot but help to be bemused when watching this anime. While by no means an incredible work of art, Oja Majo Do-Re-Mi is harmless waste of time that will amuse the child in anyone.
One Piece (TV 1999) Good (edit.dub), Very good (raw) Silly and fun, One Piece is irrepressibly shonen at it's finest. Despite the villain of the weak syndrome it at least doesn't have a martial-arts tournament involved, at least so far. The lovable rogues that make up the main cast are also a nice break from the determined martial artists that are very typical in this genre.
ONIMAI: I'm Now Your Sister! (TV)
ORESUKI: Are you the only one who loves me? (TV) Good
Outlaw Star (TV) Good While often compared to Cowboy Bebop due to the close proximity of their releases on American TV, Outlaw Star can't help but compare infavorably to that other series in almost every category. Hardly written the artistic style and sense of purpose that Cowboy Bebop was animated with, Outlaw Star is a far more traditional gritty anime that follows the unoriginal quest for the all important object plotline, but not without adding some humor along the way. The characters are not unenjoyable, and there are plenty of fun scenes, but there is nothing about Outlaw Star to make it stand out from a hundred other anime.
Pan de Peace! (TV)
Pastel Memories (TV) Good
Patlabor the Mobile Police (TV) Good "Realistic" Mecha shows, defined as having giant robots that go "clunk" more than "zoom", are always carried by the strength of three things: The Mecha designs themselves, the quality of the characters, and the plot. While Patlabor shines in the first two categories, it falls through on the third, which is probably why this isn't one of the greatest anime of all time. Instead of interconnecting its episodes to weave an intricate story, instead Patlabor goes for a slice of police life drama that happens to have Mecha in it. While the characters are fun and interesting there really isn't any sense that you need to watch the next episode to find out what happens, because the characters are just as likely to be guarding a parade route or directing traffic as they are to be fighting out-of-control Construction Labors (the shows term for Mecha).
Peacemaker (TV) Good A good but somewhat routine anime set in the late Tokugawa period. Studio Gonzo's usual high-quality adds luster to a fairly typical Samurai drama which stands out in the way it's blended with typical shonen anime premises.
Penguindrum (TV) Excellent
Pilot Candidate (TV) Decent Chalk another point up for Bandai. The box art for this one could have fooled anyone into thinking it was full of shonen love comedy shenanigans. Boy is that wrong. This series is far more akin to Evangelion in space, with homoerotic characters and absolutely no character conflict or interaction. Everyone seems to be in lockstep agreement with each other from the start of the program, and if the character designs weren't so outlandish, there would be little to make them stand out from each other. Bandai's dub is also dull and flat, as is typical for their translations. I'm not going to go out on a limb as say that this is a horrible series, but definitely make sure you've seen a few episodes of this one before you decide to put money on it.
Plastic Memories (TV)
Please Save My Earth (OAV) Excellent An incredible work of art, full of eery situations, characters and settings. The entire plot seems to revolve backwards, as more and more of the past is uncovered, while very little happens in the present except for the cast trying to come to terms with the hand that history has dealt them, & that they knew so very little about up until the story begins. Anyone should see this just to marvel at it's concept and execution.
Pokémon (TV) Good While easily dismissed as a gimmick to sell toys, games, & merchandice (which, it is), Pocket Monsters actually steps above its glorified commercial comrades by having genuinely likeable, interesting, interactive characters. So riddled with silly Japanese wordplay as to be virtually untranslatable, the dub cast of Lisa Ortiz, Eric Stuart, Jesicca Cavella, & Veronica Taylor, put out high quality performances every episode despite the pocket monster of the week plot and English scriptwriters struggling to come up with even passable dialogue to match animation that corresponds to puns that are incomprehensible to western audiences.
Popotan (TV) Decent Nothing says "I'm based on an H-game" like Popotan. I'm not sure if it actually is or not, but the plot is certainly so weak as to be nonexistant (Group of girls live in a house that magically moves from place to place at random. You'd think that they'd get tired of it and just find somewhere else to live.) And the characters are pretty, colorful images completely devoid of any personality outside of their one-dimensional stereotype description. Unless you watch anime simply for the visuals or you just can't get enough cute, jiggly, silliness, give Popotan a pass.....

Rental Magica (TV) Good There's no way to pull any punches: Rental Magica is like a watered down Venus Versus Virus if you replaced the yuri with a typical Shonen Love-Comi One-Guy, Lotsa-Girls set up. It's not horrible, it has it's fun clever moments, but it never manages to be particularly engaging during the first couple of episodes.

Rizelmine (TV) Very good A cutesy, funny, and slightly disturbing little anime. Those non-Lolicons out there, watch out! The Government might marry you off to their next superweapon!
Ro-Kyu-Bu! (TV)
Robot Girls Z (TV) Very good
Robotech (U.S. TV) Good If Robotech were made today, it's bastardization of not just one but three+ anime series would likely encourage the forming of lynch mobs everywhere, but in light of its creation almost singlehandedly creating anime fandom in the United States, and the fact that despite tearing to shreds the component anime, it still possesses the hallmark anime sophistication of plot and characterization, Robotech deserves the grudging respect of anime fans everywhere. Likewise, the legal actions of Harmony Gold have likewised engendered a severe dislike of that company in me, but that should not reflect poorly on their product, which is still one of considerable quality given the circumstances of its development.

Romeo × Juliet (TV) Excellent
(The) Rose of Versailles (TV) Excellent
Rurouni Kenshin (TV 1996) Good (dub & sub) Moderately likable characters and an excellent soundtrack are not enough to save this series from mediocrity, which is sad, considering that is possesses a very interesting premise (A pacifistic samurai in the Meiji era). The trouble results from two main areas. One, the series possesses a slow, lacksidasical pace which is compounded by the calm personalities of its main characters, and the fact that it follows a formulaic plot that centers around Himura Kenshin beating down rogue samurai and thugs with his backwards blade.
Saber Marionette J (TV) Very good (dub & sub) Cute, silly, and charming girls in an off the wall setting (A world with no real live women), is full of lighthearted hijinks and spastic action. The main characters wimpiness is kind of annoying, as is his neighbor, who is a very horribly stereotyped homosexual. While not of incredible quality, Saber Marionette over all is still an enjoyable show to watch.
Saber Marionette J Again (OAV) Very good (dub & sub) Pretty much a continuation of the plot and activities of the first series, a little more actual story seems to be going on here, but otherwise indistinguishable from the first series.
(The) Sacred Blacksmith (TV) Good
Saint October (TV) Good Loli-Goth Magical Girls? This series practically wrote itself! Saint October manages to be somewhere in-between excitingly intriguing and flatly unimaginative. Perhaps I'll get around to watching more someday, but for now, I'll have to give it a fairly average rating.
Saint Seiya (TV) Not really good For how popular this series supposedly was in Japan, DiC must have put together another bang-up translation job a la Sailor Moon to make this look so weak and trivial. I would like to see this series uncut to be able to give it a fair shake.
Saint Tail (TV) Very good Despite a rather silly premise and oversimplified storyline, the innocent and charming characters and setting seems to whitewash all those faults and make everything okay. Why is God's servant stealing things and using sorcery? I don't think she or the creators of this show understand the theological inaccuracies in taking away things that tempt good people to sin, but at least it seems benevolent in nature, and Saint Tail herself actually seems to be a sweet and innocent girl instead of a shallow bimbo like Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne.

SD Gundam Force (TV) Good Super Deformed (Or as they say in this series title, Superior Defender) Gundam's transition into the third dimension is very similar to other SD Gundam offerings, in that they are part children's program, part parody. To this extent, SD Gundam Force manages to live up to the standards of previous offerings. The gang of Zakus are especially memorable for their comedic hijinks, and the decision to leave the Omake in place for the American television release was nice. Zero, the character I can only assume is supposedly based in the Gundam Wing Zero, has an English voice actor that manages to not only deliver poor, monotone performance, but an obnoxiously effeminate one as well.
Seitokai Yakuindomo (TV)
Sekirei (TV)
Selection Project (TV) Good
Sengoku Collection (TV) Decent
Serial Experiments Lain (TV) Bad (dub & sub) Perhaps the most boring anime ever "animated", less happens in an episode of Serial Experiments Lain than in 5 minutes of a Dragonball Z episode. Watching Lain is literally indistinguishable from looking at the box cover. I know many will champion this anime's inventive and avante-garde storyline, but the characters don't inspire anyone to care and the whole plot could have been revealed in an hour instead of a whole TV series. Watching the dub, I practically fell asleep, only to wake up because Sherry Lynn, the english voice of Sasami, was voicing a bit part character in the background, and it sounded like more was happening than what had happened in three episodes. If your idea of a b*tching Saturday night is reading Ulysses and watching paint dry, get in on this series pronto.

Shinobi no Ittoki (TV)
Silent Möbius (TV) Good
Sky Wizards Academy (TV) Not really good
Slam Dunk (TV) Good The quintessential sports anime. Fun characterizations, and a main character that even non-jocks can get into since he only originally joined the team to impress a girl.
Slayers: The Book of Spells (OAV) Good The Slayers stories that contain Naga the White Serpant in place of Gourry, Zelgadis, Amelia & Co. always suffer from weak plots that go nowhere. Despite a few wildly hilarious gags, many self-referential (the cloned Naga's laughing driving villains to flee for their lives), these episodes suffer from plots that go nowhere and sideline Lina & Naga, the supposed main characters, in favor of ridiculous bit characters. While not a total loss, these OAVs are best avoided by people who are not devoted Slayers affectionados.

Soreyuke! Gedou Otometai (TV) Very good This series is one of two halves of Akahori Gedou Hour Rabuge, a series created around the situational humor generated by its paradoxical characters. In "Zettai Seigi Love Pheromone", a pair of Manzai Comedians who double as crimefighters slaughter innocents and leave a wake of massive destruction despite supposedly being the heroes. In "Soreyuke! Gedou Otometai!", a family of witches seek to fulfil the dying wish of their deceased parents, both of which were low level minions in a villain's organization and only want their children to accomplish great evil. Needless to say, their sweet, innocent daughters fail miserably. A fun little series without much substance.

Space Dandy (TV)
Space Pirate Captain Harlock (TV)
Speed Grapher (TV) Very good Twisted, colorful & energetic, Speed Grapher isn't your typical psychological drama. If anything, it should probably be classified as it's own new genre: "psychological action". Studio Gonzo shows off their stunning talent once again, blending phantasmal imagery and impossible situations into a tale dealing with the dirty, gritty reality of the darkness which exists within man and his society. It's a terrible shame that Funimation couldn't get the license rights to the series' original OP: Duran Duran's Girls on Film
Spice & Wolf: merchant meets the wise wolf (TV)
Spirit Warrior (OAV) So-so Story about mythical evil + heaps of supernatural violence = Peacock King. If you like these two things and don't mind a complete absence of anything resembling character development or plot, then this should be enjoyable to you.
Spy Classroom (TV) Good
SSSS.Gridman (TV) Good
Star Driver (TV) Excellent
Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko (TV) Decent With a plot that is basically The Last Starfighter with a female lead made into anime, where two interstellar nations fight Battletech Clan style trials of possession with simulated space fighter combat, Yamamoto Yoko's best trait is its gag title. On the one hand, there is nothing particularly low quality about this series, but at the same time, every aspect of it is decidedly mediocre. Watching this series you get the feeling that you've seen every episode before, on a different show. Not the greatest feeling.

(The) Super Milk-chan Show (TV) Excellent Quite possibly the wierdest thing to come out of Studio Peirrot, if not Japan, Oh! Super Milk-chan! Is quite possibly the wackiest thing ever written, and is a laugh a minute. Every episode is nothing but monumental Japanese cultural parodies intertwined with straight off the wall silliness. I doubt there is anything I could write here that could even explain this series, so instead I'll just paraphrase Milk-chan. "You haven't seen this show yet? You dumb-a__!"

Tegami Bachi: Letter Bee (TV) Very good An anime of unique premise with a deft use of color & light. The overall story seems somewhat simplistic at first, but should Letter Bee live up to it's potential, it will be an inevitable classic.
Tenchi in Tokyo (TV) Decent (dub & sub) As if there wasn't reason to dislike Tenchi enough, he now has abandoned his home full of hot alien women who want him to go to Tokyo and desperately attempt to get a normal girl to hook up with him. Jealous men everywhere are getting their torches and pitchforks together. On top of that, Shin Tenchi Muyo is subject to yet another weak plot based around Tenchi's lineage (we haven't seen this, like, a hundred times), and actually has ridiculous and obnoxious monsters of the week that have to be defeated by team Tenchi. On top of it all, AIC decided to skimp on the art budget, so most of the characters are just colorful blobs with little detail drawn on. Unless you absolutely LOVE Tenchi, stay away from this.
Tenchi Universe (TV) Good (dub & sub) Apparently, there is some rule at AIC that whenever they make an awesome OAV, they have to make an extremely watered down TV version. Tenchi Muyo TV goes through the same song and dance introducing the Tenchi cast but now in a far more contrived and arbitrary fashion that completely contradicts the OAV series (i.e., it's an alternate universe, folks). They then proceed to run around hither and thither without actually accomplishing anything. Most of the saucy, edgy sexual humor and tension that existed in the OAV are completely absent, stealing much of the soul of the original. While Tenchi had some degree of a backbone in the OAV, he is little more than a simpering victim for vindictive alien women in this incarnation. While it has it's charming moments simply because it possesses far more time for character development than the OAV series, and has the benefit of having Kiyone in it, it is definitely inferior and should be avoided if your not a Tenchi fan.
Teppen—!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Laughing 'til you Cry (TV) Very good
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (TV 4)
This Ugly Yet Beautiful World (TV) Good My initial impression of Kono Minikuku mo Utsukushii Sekai is that it's like Guyver, if Guyver had some really cute moe girls in it. This leads me to believe that I might enjoy watching more in the future, but for the moment, it's rather low priority: I've seen Guyver and I've seen moe.
Tiger & Bunny (TV) Excellent
To Love-Ru (TV) Not really good What initially seems like a nostalgic early 90's style shonen love-comi reveals itself to be an overly provocative string of fanservice lacking in meaningful plot & character interaction by episode 3. You can only do one so many parodies of tentacle rape before it becomes an homage, and at that point, you might as well just draw hentai and be straight with everyone.
(The) Tower of Druaga: The Aegis of Uruk (TV) Good I watched the first episode of Tower of Druaga, and I have to admit, it was a funny little parody of MMORPGs and dungeon-crawling. Unfortunately, the first episode has absolutely nothing to do with the plot, taking place completely in a dream sequence of the main characters. This had the jarring effect of leaving me having seen the Tower of Druaga and still feeling like I had no idea what it was about. It was offputting enough that I stopped watching it. I'm not violently opposed to watching more of it at a later date, but for now, I think I have better things to do than watch a series that won't even properly introduce itself.

Urusei Yatsura (TV 1981) Masterpiece Before Love Hina, before Ranma 1/2 and Tenchi Muyo, there was Urusei Yatsura, the story by Rumiko Takahashi that single-handedly invented the shonen romantic comedy, alien girlfriends, and a whole host of typical anime clichés that are taken for granted by modern audiences. If that weren't enough to already warrant it a place as a masterpiece of anime, the sheer off the wall zaniness combined with tense love-hate relationships and strong Japanese cultural overtones that would come to be the hallmark of Rumiko Takahashi's works make this an interesting and fun series to watch even over two decades from its original release.

Witch Hunter Robin (TV) Good Like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, only deathly serious, with decent writing, and animated. Definately worth the time to watch an episode or two. Stands out by failing to walk down the completely nihilist path typical of this sort of occult fiction and instead shows a lighter, caring side where appropriate. Also carries with it X-men parralels, but is far more brooding than any American tight-wearing comic book.
Wizard Barristers: Benmashi Cecil (TV)
Wolf's Rain (TV) Good A dark and moody setting, Wolf's Rain creates an interesting. mythic atmosphere. Characters are three dimensional and the storyline is intriguing. I'd like to see more.

Yu Yu Hakusho: Ghost Files (TV) Very good Yet another shonen beat 'em up series, Yu Yu Hakusho carries with it its own special quality that makes it stand out, a real understanding for the characterization of friendship. Not the premanufactured, out of the box "we wrote the characters to be best buddies" kind of friendship. The byzantine but ultimately loyal friendship between the shows main characters is something that most guys can relate to on a personal level, and helps to make you care about what is happening, even when the show devolves into the de facto martial arts tournament. Lighthearted, silly slapstick humor helps to keep things enjoyable as well, as this series never devolves to the state of taking itself far too seriously that Dragonball does. Worth the price of admission, which, considering that it is on U.S. TV, is free.
Yu-Gi-Oh! (TV 1/1998) Good With a first season that was completely axed from the U.S. release because it didn't involve selling merchandise and instead dealt with getting revenge on punk kids who pick on people, Yugi-Oh is an interesting premise that quickly degenerates into a half-hour commercial for the latest card, which is made even worse by the fact that the characters in the anime don't even play by the rules but instead interpret the abilities of the cards to simply fit the moment ("I'm the King of Games! I can cheat all I want!"). Interesting character advancing moments appear from time to time later on, and I cannot truthfully rate the original version because I have never seen it, but the English dub is a distraction at best and a waste of time at worst.

Yuri!!! on Ice (TV) Very good
Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs (TV) Good
Zatch Bell (TV) Decent A rather odd premise that combines the theme of pet monster fighting a la Pocket Monsters with a Shonen Martial Arts feel with occult overtones, Konjiki no Gash Bell, while not incredible, does seem at least mildly inventive.
Zettai Seigi Love Pheromone (TV) Very good This series is one of two halves of Akahori Gedou Hour Rabuge, a series created around the situational humor generated by its paradoxical characters.
Zoids (TV) Good With a good and not thoroughly predictable plot set in the middle of a war, Zoids does a very decent job of livening up what is essentially a half-hour commercial for toys. Characters are, while not deep, at least likeable, and the script is decent enough to keep you interested at any age. It's a shame that the follow-up series couldn't be more like this one
Zoids/ZERO (TV) Decent Coming off like someone watered down Patlabor to the point that the characters all blend together and with the same stock out of the blister they came in Mecha designs, Zoids/Zero totally squanders the goodwill that the original Zoids series engendered in me. Utterly uninteresting. Zoids/Zero is nothing more than a waste of a half-hour
Zoids: Fuzors (TV) Decent Seeking to erase any fond feelings I had for this franchise, Zoids: Fuzors nails the final spike into the coffin lid: They turned it into a tournament combat plot. Yes folks, when all hope of developing a storyline is lost or no one seems to give a damn, it's good to know that a combat tournament either with giant robots or martial arts will flesh out another season without anyone putting any effort into pesky things like writing.
