Silly and lighthearted, Nuku Nuku TV unfortuneately develops a predictable episodic quality to allow for the length of a TV season worth of episodes. |

Mediaworks manages to produce an incredible atmosphere, as usual, and the plot is immediately intriguing, basically revolving around a group of immortals (a la 3X3 EYES) in the U.S. during the 1930's. Unfortunately, despite the well designed backdrops, the action seems clunky, disjointed, and obviously written from the perspective of someone unfamiliar with American culture. Perhaps it is simply because I live in the United States that I found this irksome, but some scenes (Gangster's making big speeches from their balconies like polticians?) seem like they should be nonsensical regardless of one's culture. Irregardless, I wouldn't be averse to continuing to view this series, but as it stands from the first episode I'd find it hard to give this more than a decent rating. |

Mentally stimulating but not to the point of losing the audience, the Big O manages to incorporate giant mecha combat into it all. |

A celebration of youth and growing up, Boys be has a way of turning even negative experiences to a positive light. If romantic shoujo stories were written for men, they'd be like this. |

If you take the original Bubblegum Crisis, give every character a hit of crack and a pot of black coffee, you can pretty much predict how they'll act in 2040. While the fleshing out of the setting is a really great bonus, the characters are "Eva-ised" and unlikeable in the extreme. The new hardsuit designs later on are ridiculous looking, and the characters look like they were lifted straight out of other AIC anime without any modification. The wierd looking head during the ending credits is horribly creepy. |

Three guys: the scruffy good looking one; the angsty good looking one, and the nerdy yet still kinda good looking one get a mysterious black letter that promises them the chance to win a lot of money. They go to the address contained therein, and they're told they can win large sums of cash by participating in team-street fights, they agree and go out and club some guys with a pipe, while the nerdy guy whines about how they need to get along. Now that I've told you the entire plot, and you've seen the picture of the three guys, you have absolutely no reason to ever watch this show, unless you are such a fangirl that you absolutely, POSITIVELY have to see every show that has ever been made starring angsty & possibly grungy pretty boys. Is Bus Gamer horrible? No. The animation quality is decent, the cast is believable in their characterizations, and the soundrack is passable. Bus Gamer is an unimaginative, throwaway avenue for the exposition of angsty bishounen which is without any real plot or action. Even the fighting is utterly forgettable. |

Filled with some of the most gorgeous uses of lighting effects found in anime, Clannad sometimes seems to be more a series of character vignettes than a cohesive series. Each scene is like a little soft broken heart, a moment frozen in time both tear-jerking yet upliftingly beautiful. That said, there are a few eye-rolling moments, where it seems like the characters lives are full of too much angst to be real, and main character Tomoya seems to be something of a jerk. Still, all in all, Clannad is a beautiful, serenely paced series. |

For a shoujo anime, D.N. Angel definitely has some cross-market appeal. Riku and Risa Harada are attractive, perky, and likeable, and immediately drew me in. The series has a fairly interesting concept and is both humorous and engaging. It is also interesting that while the main character's alternate ego (Dark) is bishounen, he (Daisuke) is most definitely not. Nice to see that someone appreciates the dorky guy. |

On the down side, some of the supporting characters come off as overly simplified, as if the Japanese writers didn't know what to do with them (Mayor-shinchou! I'm looking at you! Your quirky name doesn't justify your existance!) and Mojo-Jojo is criminally retarded for a monkey with an oversized brain. |

There's nothing here that is horrible, but nothing fantastic either. |

By the end of Dragonball Z, the power levels of the fighters had already increased to such a ridiculous level that worlds were destroyed with a thought and more time was spent showing the effect fighters attacks had on the local ecosystem than the fight itself because it was the only way to portray the ludicrous amount of energy being thrown around. Dragonball GT contorts an already over the top plot in arbitrary directions to justify the continuation of the series. The fact that Goku had to power DOWN for the finale is proof positive that this is one show that went on waaay too long. |

The series characters appear lifeless, and it's setting & plot are cookie-cutter copies from a number of other dystopian science fiction stories. While it's not terrible, it certainly isn't original, and it really doesn't live up to other anime offerings in the same genre. |

With a premise which is a role reversal from typical shonen love comedies, Yu Watase proceeds with her trademark methods of making you love the characters and then tearing them apart one by one before the inevitable resolution. A beautiful anime for the person who doesn't mind getting their heartstrings pulled. |

Gantz is a huge disappointment, because it shatters my previously held assertion that Studio Gonzo could do no wrong. While there are hints of an attempt to comment on the human condition in Gantz, on the whole, the series seems to be primarily interested in being crude for no other reason than the shock value of it all. Every evil and vice of man is hyper-exaggerated and everything is deliberately rubbed in your face with disgusting detail. If the point of Gantz is that people are vile, then WE GET IT. An entire series of people being total jerks to one another and assaulting one another isn't necessary to get that point across. The questions about the scenario set up in the series are never answered, and in the end it's nothing but a vehicle for guro porn and bad behavior as spectacle. No thanks, Studio Gonzo, I'm very disappointed in you. |

Anyone even thinking about watching this, do yourself a favor and just go rent some hentai instead. |

Boring as a textbook, the Heroic Legend of Arislan is a poorly executed fantasy OAV that is already insufferable from its onset. With a trite and predictable story about a Prince who has lost his kingdom to an evil overlord (who killed the prince's dad and married mom) and decided to try to win it back, this anime would have to have fantastic actions scenes and energetic interesting characters to keep it going. Instead, it has nothing but scene after scene of dull pastels and one-dimensional characters, that ride leisurely through the most predictable plot imaginable. From what I've told you and the blurbs about this anime already on this website, I am sure you can already figure out what happens, so I won't waste my time attempting to further illiterate it. |

Well, the characters are actually different from the average beat 'em up, being actually slightly interesting, and the plot, based on the legends of the 12 Kingdoms era of China, is also a step apart, but truthfully, a lot of it is just that Ikki Tousen looks good visually, and heck, I'm not above taking a helping of fan service now and again. |

A series virtually impossible to explain in words but an instant classic to anyone who has ever seen it, little Sana spits out things you'd never expect to be coming from any elementary school girl, let alone an animated one, and at a pace that would put the Micromachines guy to shame. Off the wall and with absolutely no shame, Kodomo no Omocha doesn't just break cultural tabboos and restraints, it outright ignores them to get to the root of many real human delimas. Funimation's release disappoints on two counts, but only one of them is really their fault. Apparently, Funimation was unable to obtain rights to use the likeness and music of the band Tokio, which performed the first opening theme, so not only did they have to replace it with the second opening, but they also had to simply drop chunks of the japanese dialog which had their music in the background or in which they had a cameo. The second problem has to due with their edited dub, which seems designed with the intention of trying to get it on to a major American network. blah. |

Ronin Warriors possesses an entertainment value similar and comparible to other boy's children's programs from the mid 80's, to include Transformers, Thundercats, and others, but stands slightly above those by having slightly more sophisticated characters, especially villains. |

Lime-iro Senkitan is just about the least historically accurate retelling of the Russo-Japanese War in the history of existance. Now, I haven't spent a lot of time studying that conflict, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't fought between the summoned mechanical familiars of Japanese school girls and a Russian BDSM club, and I'm also fairly sure there were no flying pre-dreadnaughts powered by guys having sex with them. Yep. The main character has sex with the ship in this series, folks. He has to. or they were all going to die. Yep. And the kids watched. Now, if you are like me, and you like all things preposterous and wacky in anime, you're probably thinking "Wow, really?! Where can I see this series!" If not, then you should probably forget you ever read this other than to remember that I told you never, ever to watch Lime-iro Senkitan, because I don't want to here you complain. You've been warned. |

Why Pioneer never deemed it necessary to produce a dubbed version of this series is beyond me. None of the content could be deemed offensive by even the most stringent moral standards, and I'm sure that this program could find a more devoted following among young girls. Starting out as a parody of the entire Maho Shoujo genre, Pretty Sammy unfortunately falls victim to turning into exactly the type of show it was created to mock. This doesn't make it bad, per se, since the entire program upholds animation, plot, and characterization quality on par with the original Tenchi Muyo OVAs, but it does lead to some degree of tedium. |

A fun jaunt through your subconcious mind where imagination basically runs wild where it will. |

Magikano is everything that gives Shonen Love-Comi a bad name. It's main character is a two-dimensional, motivationless place-holder. It's main female lead is a magic-using big-breasted slut with no moral scruples and a desperate need to get in the characters pants. The supporting cast is a cavalcade of unimaginative, stereotypical hangers-on who have decided to prevent the main female lead's seduction of the male main character, for a slew of arbitrary and uncreative reasons. 0 effort is put towards developing the characters motivations, personalities, or interests outside of the main characters sex. Only slightly more effort was put towards creating and advancing the plot. Unfortunately for the creators, Tokyokids, who no doubt expected to cash in on this shoddy paint-by-numbers program, the character designs are as boring as the paint in my mother's dining room, so I'm sure all the merchandising plans they had lined up ultimately came to nothing. Magikano is far from the worst anime in the world, heck, you might even get a chuckle or two out of it, but it's just not worth the money. |

Having finally sat down and watched some of this series, I'm a little shocked that this is what launched the Yuri revolution. Whilst it's sweet enough, Maria-sama ga Miteru has a pacing similar to the shifting of tectonic plates, the dialogue between most of the characters is flatter than a bowling lane, and you get the distinct feeling that everything interesting has already happened, and you are simply hearing about it from the committee. Main love interest Sachiko has a personality like a dull hatchet, and it seems like everyone's relationships are decided not by themselves, but by a public opinion poll. Whilst I didn't hate watching Maria-sama gu Miteru, and I'd be willing to watch more of it if it was on, I can't say I'd go out of my way for it, and I am a little shocked at it's large popularity. Now I'm going to have a real problem with people who love this series and trash-talk Strawberry Panic..... |

The easiest way to describe this anime would be Ranma 1/2 meets Bakuretsu Hunters, it is a series that easily have been a hentai series, but it is not. Instead, it plays sexual situation and innuendo for humor at every opportunity while carrying on a setting-hopping episodic war against the evil overlord which feels very similar to Bakuretsu Hunters. While easily dismissable, the characters and personalities of Maze are it's saving grace, and viewers are always given a small nugget of plot an episode at a time, just enough to remained intrigued. |

High quality animation will not win this OAV over with anyone but the fanbase of the video game, and I sincerely doubt anyone else was intended to watch it. |

Hardly written the artistic style and sense of purpose that Cowboy Bebop was animated with, Outlaw Star is a far more traditional gritty anime that follows the unoriginal quest for the all important object plotline, but not without adding some humor along the way. The characters are not unenjoyable, and there are plenty of fun scenes, but there is nothing about Outlaw Star to make it stand out from a hundred other anime. |

"Realistic" Mecha shows, defined as having giant robots that go "clunk" more than "zoom", are always carried by the strength of three things: The Mecha designs themselves, the quality of the characters, and the plot. While Patlabor shines in the first two categories, it falls through on the third, which is probably why this isn't one of the greatest anime of all time. Instead of interconnecting its episodes to weave an intricate story, instead Patlabor goes for a slice of police life drama that happens to have Mecha in it. While the characters are fun and interesting there really isn't any sense that you need to watch the next episode to find out what happens, because the characters are just as likely to be guarding a parade route or directing traffic as they are to be fighting out-of-control Construction Labors (the shows term for Mecha). |

Chalk another point up for Bandai. The box art for this one could have fooled anyone into thinking it was full of shonen love comedy shenanigans. Boy is that wrong. This series is far more akin to Evangelion in space, with homoerotic characters and absolutely no character conflict or interaction. Everyone seems to be in lockstep agreement with each other from the start of the program, and if the character designs weren't so outlandish, there would be little to make them stand out from each other. Bandai's dub is also dull and flat, as is typical for their translations. I'm not going to go out on a limb as say that this is a horrible series, but definitely make sure you've seen a few episodes of this one before you decide to put money on it. |

So riddled with silly Japanese wordplay as to be virtually untranslatable, the dub cast of Lisa Ortiz, Eric Stuart, Jesicca Cavella, & Veronica Taylor, put out high quality performances every episode despite the pocket monster of the week plot and English scriptwriters struggling to come up with even passable dialogue to match animation that corresponds to puns that are incomprehensible to western audiences. |

Likewise, the legal actions of Harmony Gold have likewised engendered a severe dislike of that company in me, but that should not reflect poorly on their product, which is still one of considerable quality given the circumstances of its development. |

One, the series possesses a slow, lacksidasical pace which is compounded by the calm personalities of its main characters, and the fact that it follows a formulaic plot that centers around Himura Kenshin beating down rogue samurai and thugs with his backwards blade. |

The gang of Zakus are especially memorable for their comedic hijinks, and the decision to leave the Omake in place for the American television release was nice. Zero, the character I can only assume is supposedly based in the Gundam Wing Zero, has an English voice actor that manages to not only deliver poor, monotone performance, but an obnoxiously effeminate one as well. |

I know many will champion this anime's inventive and avante-garde storyline, but the characters don't inspire anyone to care and the whole plot could have been revealed in an hour instead of a whole TV series. Watching the dub, I practically fell asleep, only to wake up because Sherry Lynn, the english voice of Sasami, was voicing a bit part character in the background, and it sounded like more was happening than what had happened in three episodes. If your idea of a b*tching Saturday night is reading Ulysses and watching paint dry, get in on this series pronto. |

While not a total loss, these OAVs are best avoided by people who are not devoted Slayers affectionados. |

In "Zettai Seigi Love Pheromone", a pair of Manzai Comedians who double as crimefighters slaughter innocents and leave a wake of massive destruction despite supposedly being the heroes. In "Soreyuke! Gedou Otometai!", a family of witches seek to fulfil the dying wish of their deceased parents, both of which were low level minions in a villain's organization and only want their children to accomplish great evil. Needless to say, their sweet, innocent daughters fail miserably. A fun little series without much substance. |

Quite possibly the wierdest thing to come out of Studio Peirrot, if not Japan, Oh! Super Milk-chan! Is quite possibly the wackiest thing ever written, and is a laugh a minute. Every episode is nothing but monumental Japanese cultural parodies intertwined with straight off the wall silliness. I doubt there is anything I could write here that could even explain this series, so instead I'll just paraphrase Milk-chan. "You haven't seen this show yet? You dumb-a__!" |

An anime of unique premise with a deft use of color & light. The overall story seems somewhat simplistic at first, but should Letter Bee live up to it's potential, it will be an inevitable classic. |

As if there wasn't reason to dislike Tenchi enough, he now has abandoned his home full of hot alien women who want him to go to Tokyo and desperately attempt to get a normal girl to hook up with him. Jealous men everywhere are getting their torches and pitchforks together. On top of that, Shin Tenchi Muyo is subject to yet another weak plot based around Tenchi's lineage (we haven't seen this, like, a hundred times), and actually has ridiculous and obnoxious monsters of the week that have to be defeated by team Tenchi. On top of it all, AIC decided to skimp on the art budget, so most of the characters are just colorful blobs with little detail drawn on. Unless you absolutely LOVE Tenchi, stay away from this. |

Apparently, there is some rule at AIC that whenever they make an awesome OAV, they have to make an extremely watered down TV version. Tenchi Muyo TV goes through the same song and dance introducing the Tenchi cast but now in a far more contrived and arbitrary fashion that completely contradicts the OAV series (i.e., it's an alternate universe, folks). They then proceed to run around hither and thither without actually accomplishing anything. Most of the saucy, edgy sexual humor and tension that existed in the OAV are completely absent, stealing much of the soul of the original. While Tenchi had some degree of a backbone in the OAV, he is little more than a simpering victim for vindictive alien women in this incarnation. While it has it's charming moments simply because it possesses far more time for character development than the OAV series, and has the benefit of having Kiyone in it, it is definitely inferior and should be avoided if your not a Tenchi fan. |

My initial impression of Kono Minikuku mo Utsukushii Sekai is that it's like Guyver, if Guyver had some really cute moe girls in it. This leads me to believe that I might enjoy watching more in the future, but for the moment, it's rather low priority: I've seen Guyver and I've seen moe. |

What initially seems like a nostalgic early 90's style shonen love-comi reveals itself to be an overly provocative string of fanservice lacking in meaningful plot & character interaction by episode 3. You can only do one so many parodies of tentacle rape before it becomes an homage, and at that point, you might as well just draw hentai and be straight with everyone. |

I watched the first episode of Tower of Druaga, and I have to admit, it was a funny little parody of MMORPGs and dungeon-crawling. Unfortunately, the first episode has absolutely nothing to do with the plot, taking place completely in a dream sequence of the main characters. This had the jarring effect of leaving me having seen the Tower of Druaga and still feeling like I had no idea what it was about. It was offputting enough that I stopped watching it. I'm not violently opposed to watching more of it at a later date, but for now, I think I have better things to do than watch a series that won't even properly introduce itself. |

Before Love Hina, before Ranma 1/2 and Tenchi Muyo, there was Urusei Yatsura, the story by Rumiko Takahashi that single-handedly invented the shonen romantic comedy, alien girlfriends, and a whole host of typical anime clichés that are taken for granted by modern audiences. If that weren't enough to already warrant it a place as a masterpiece of anime, the sheer off the wall zaniness combined with tense love-hate relationships and strong Japanese cultural overtones that would come to be the hallmark of Rumiko Takahashi's works make this an interesting and fun series to watch even over two decades from its original release. |

Stands out by failing to walk down the completely nihilist path typical of this sort of occult fiction and instead shows a lighter, caring side where appropriate. Also carries with it X-men parralels, but is far more brooding than any American tight-wearing comic book. |

Yet another shonen beat 'em up series, Yu Yu Hakusho carries with it its own special quality that makes it stand out, a real understanding for the characterization of friendship. Not the premanufactured, out of the box "we wrote the characters to be best buddies" kind of friendship. The byzantine but ultimately loyal friendship between the shows main characters is something that most guys can relate to on a personal level, and helps to make you care about what is happening, even when the show devolves into the de facto martial arts tournament. Lighthearted, silly slapstick humor helps to keep things enjoyable as well, as this series never devolves to the state of taking itself far too seriously that Dragonball does. Worth the price of admission, which, considering that it is on U.S. TV, is free. |

With a first season that was completely axed from the U.S. release because it didn't involve selling merchandise and instead dealt with getting revenge on punk kids who pick on people, Yugi-Oh is an interesting premise that quickly degenerates into a half-hour commercial for the latest card, which is made even worse by the fact that the characters in the anime don't even play by the rules but instead interpret the abilities of the cards to simply fit the moment ("I'm the King of Games! I can cheat all I want!"). Interesting character advancing moments appear from time to time later on, and I cannot truthfully rate the original version because I have never seen it, but the English dub is a distraction at best and a waste of time at worst. |

This series is one of two halves of Akahori Gedou Hour Rabuge, a series created around the situational humor generated by its paradoxical characters. In "Zettai Seigi Love Pheromone", a pair of Manzai Comedians who double as crimefighters slaughter innocents and leave a wake of massive destruction despite supposedly being the heroes. In "Soreyuke! Gedou Otometai!", a family of witches seek to fulfil the dying wish of their deceased parents, both of which were low level minions in a villain's organization and only want their children to accomplish great evil. Needless to say, their sweet, innocent daughters fail miserably. A fun little series without much substance. |

With a good and not thoroughly predictable plot set in the middle of a war, Zoids does a very decent job of livening up what is essentially a half-hour commercial for toys. Characters are, while not deep, at least likeable, and the script is decent enough to keep you interested at any age. It's a shame that the follow-up series couldn't be more like this one |

Seeking to erase any fond feelings I had for this franchise, Zoids: Fuzors nails the final spike into the coffin lid: They turned it into a tournament combat plot. Yes folks, when all hope of developing a storyline is lost or no one seems to give a damn, it's good to know that a combat tournament either with giant robots or martial arts will flesh out another season without anyone putting any effort into pesky things like writing. |
