California Gallery Opens Junko Mizuno Art Exhibit on Saturday

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins
Exhibition to display original ink drawings of Mizuno's Hansel and Gretel manga

The Gallery Nucleus in the Los Angeles suburb of Alhambra will host an exhibition displaying Junko Mizuno's Hansel and Gretel manga art from August 18-September 9. Hansel and Gretel is one of Mizuno's manga retellings of classic fairy tales, which has also included her Cinderalla manga. Gallery Nucleus describes the manga as a story that "sends us on a vaguely familiar journey, sprinkled with morbid humor and an almost completely new cast of bold, twisted characters."

The book's original ink illustrations will be on display during the exhibition, and will be available for purchase. Those who purchase an original ink page will get a free color print. The exhibition's opening reception on Saturday will host an hourly raffle with prizes chosen by Mizuno herself, and Mizuno will be in attendance for signings. Viz Media released Mizuno's Cinderalla manga in 2002, and it released Hansel and Gretel in 2003.

Mizuno is well known for her gothic/kawaii noir style, which is a combination of themes that are both humorous and tragic. Mizuno is also an accomplished author, publishing numerous books such as Princess Mermaid. Her artwork has been exhibited at galleries in New York, Seattle, Toronto, Tokyo, and Paris.

This is not the first time Mizuno's art has appeared at Gallery Nucleus; her works previously appeared at the same gallery in 2011, 2010, and 2007. In September 2010, Mizuno appeared in San Francisco to sign autographs.
