The live-action film of Toriko Chiya's Clover manga premiered this weekend at #2. The film stars Emi Takei (Rurouni Kenshin's Kaoru) as Saya, a young office lady (OL) who's never had a romantic relationship because she never gave up on a boy she liked in middle school. KANJANI Eight band member Tadayoshi Ōkura will costar as (Papadol!, Otenki-oneesan, Dr. DMAT) as Susumu, Saya's masochistic supervisor who confesses his love. The film also ranked #2 on Box Office Mojo's chart and earned 170,561,065 yen (US$1,490,202) on 298 screens.
The live-action film of Rin Mikimoto's shōjo manga series Kin Kyori Renai (Close Range Love) fell from #1 to #5 in its fourth weekend. The film stars Tomohisa Yamashita as the tsundere teacher Haruka Sakurai and Nana Komatsu in her debut role as genius high school student Yuni Kururugi. The film also ranked #5 on Box Office Mojo's chart and earned 77,242,801 yen (US$674,766) on 179 screens for a new total of 908,206,266 yen (US$7,934,780).
Eiga HappinessCharge PreCure! Ningyō no Kuni no Ballerina (HappinessCharge PreCure! The Movie: Ballerina of the Country of Dolls) fell from #5 to #10 in its fourth weekend. Yui Horie, Daisuke Ono, and Toshiyuki Morikawa guest star in a story where the Pretty Cures must save the Doll Kingdom. The film ranked #12 on Box Office Mojo's chart and earned 50,868,268 yen (US$444,423) on 210 screens for a new total of 418,293,158 yen (US$3,656,154).
Stand By Me Doraemon, the 36th Doraemon film and franchise's first CGI film, fell from #8 to #11 on Box Office Mojo's chart in its 13th weekend and earned 54,788,124 yen (US$470,553) on 348 screens for a new total of 8,762,701,409 yen (US$75,259,337). Satoshi Tsumabuki, who previously played 30-year-old Nobita in a series of live-action Toyota car commercials, also plays Nobita as a young man in the film.
Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (Rurouni Kenshin: Densetsu no Saigo-hen), the second of two sequels to the 2012 live-action Rurouni Kenshin film, fell from #6 to #13 on Box Office Mojo's chart in its eighth weekend and earned 46,428,708 yen (US$405,817) on 335 screens for a total of 4,356,001,428 yen (US$38,074,283). The sequels adapt the Kyoto arc of Nobuhiro Watsuki's original manga, with Takeru Satoh returning as Kenshin Himura and Tatsuya Fujiwara (live-action Death Note) playing the antagonist Makoto Shishio.
