Original stories by Ryo Mizuno inspired anime, manga adaptations

Seven Seas Entertainment announced on Friday that it has licensed Ryo Mizuno's original Record of Lodoss War: The Grey Witch novel. The company will release the volume in a "Gold Edition" on October 31. The release is based on Kadokawa Shoten's 2013 deluxe edition.

Seven Seas Entertainment describes the story:

Parn, a reckless but passionate swordsman embarks on a quest to discover the source of a great evil overwhelming the country of Lodoss. Joining him are Deedlit, a young elf wielding powerful magic; Ghim, the tough-as-stones dwarf; Etoh, a fledgling priest; Slayn, the group's sorcerer; and Woodchuck, their indispensable thief. Together, this iconic group will join forces to discover the truth behind a world torn apart by ancient deities and wield the power needed to defeat the Grey Witch!

Mizuno published the novel with illustrations by Yutaka Izubuchi in 1988. The novel inspired two manga adaptations, the first of which was published in English by Central Park Media's CPM Manga imprint.

Record of Lodoss War began as a series of magazine articles that recounted the pencil-and-paper role-playing game sessions of players who called themselves Group SNE. Those fantasy adventures evolved into a series of novels by Mizuno that now have over 10 million copies in print. Mizuno's original Record of Lodoss War stories inspired the 1990 Record of Lodoss War video anime series and the 1998 Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight television anime sequel. Central Park Media licensed and released both fantasy titles in North America.
