Edge of Tomorrow Sequel Film Gets Title

Liman: Live Die Repeat and Repeat is "not an if, but a when"

Director Doug Liman revealed in an interview with film news website Collider on Sunday that the sequel to the live-action Edge of Tomorrow film will be titled Live Die Repeat and Repeat. Liman noted that the film's production is "not an if, it's a when," and that lead actors Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt are "excited" about the sequel.

The sequel's title calls back to the first film's "Live. Die. Repeat" tagline, which had more prominence than the film's actual title in some promotional materials and the home video release.

Liman is attached to direct the sequel, and Erwin Stoff and Tom Lassally are slated to produce the film. Joe Shrapnel (Race, Frankie & Alice) and Anna Waterhouse (Race, On the Shoulders of Giants) have been hired to write the sequel. Edge of Tomorrow screenwriter (and Rogue Nation director) Christopher McQuarrie is "in talks" to be a producer on the film, and he is developing the script with Shrapnel and Waterhouse.

Cruise had said in July 2015 that he pitched an idea for a sequel to the film. He presented the idea when he met with McQuarrie and Liman.

Edge of Tomorrow adapts the novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. The film stars Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Charlotte Riley, Kick Gurry, Bill Paxton, Kidus Henok, Tony Way, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste. The film opened in the United States in June 2014.

Viz Media published Sakurazaka's novel in English to launch its Haikasoru imprint for Japanese science fiction and fantasy in 2009. The book's cover art was drawn by Yoshitoshi ABe (Serial Experiments Lain, Haibane Renmei). Viz also released a one-volume full-color graphic novel adaptation of the story in 2014. Nick Mamatas (Move Under Ground) adapted the story and Lee Ferguson (Green Arrow, Miranda Mercury) drew the art.

The novel also spawned a manga by artist Takeshi Obata (Hikaru no Go, Death Note, Bakuman.) and writer Ryōsuke Takeuchi (ST&RS) in Shueisha's Young Jump magazine in 2014. Sakurazaka himself said in 2014 that he is working on a sequel novel.
