KC Global Media Completes Acquisition of Animax Asia From Sony

posted on by Rafael Antonio Pineda
AXN, Sony One, GEM channels also acquired

Entertainment news magazine Variety reported last week that KC Global Media, a media company headed by former Sony Pictures Television executives Andy Kaplan and George Chien, has completed its acquisition of Sony's Animax Asia anime channel, as well as the AXN, Sony One, and GEM channels.

Variety reported on the acquisition in January, but the deal at the time did not include the sale of GEM. All four channels operate in Southeast Asia (Sony One also operates in South Korea).

Kaplan was the president of Sony Worldwide Networks from 2002 to 2018, while Chien was the former executive vice president of Sony Pictures Television Media Networks.

All three channels have a history of airing anime, but Animax Asia is an anime-exclusive channel, the first of its kind in Asia when it debuted in 2004. AXN airs primarily action-themed shows imported from the United States, while Sony One airs primarily Korean drama shows. GEM primarily airs Japanese drama shows.
